Detox Scam!

In medical terms there is no such thing as “detoxing”. The only respectable detox program is the medical treatment of people with life-threatening drug addictions. All other detox programs are the inventions of entrepreneurs, quacks and charlatans trying to sell a bogus remedy and feeding off your desire to rid your body of toxins that supposedly accumulate in your body. In medical terms, this is pure nonsense.

The idea that supplements, juices, vegetables or pills can flush your system of impurities and leave your organs squeaky clean is a scam. It is a pseudo-medical concept and the only thing it will flush out is your money. With celebrity advocates from Gwyneth Paltrow to Oprah Winfrey touting the benefits and wondrous effects, detoxing has become big business. It is tough not to be suckered by the detox industry.

If toxins really built up in a way your body couldn’t excrete, such as with mercury or lead, you would either be dead or in need of serious medical intervention. Your body has kidneys, a liver, skin, even lungs that are designed for detoxifying and there is no known way – certainly not through detox treatments – to make this system work better.

Most detox programs revolve around “toxins”: poisonous substances that you ingest or inhale. But they never clearly state exactly what these toxins are. If the toxins were named and identified, their presence could be detected in a simple blood test then measured before and after treatment to determine their effectiveness. In 2009, a network of scientists assembled by the UK charity Sense about Science contacted the manufacturers of 15 of the most popular detox products sold. The products ranged from dietary supplements to smoothies and even shampoos. Not one of the manufacturers could name the toxins their products flushed out nor what they meant by detoxification.

Today, the shelves of health food stores are packed with detox products. You can buy detoxifying tablets, tinctures, tea bags, face masks, bath salts, hair brushes, shampoos, body gels and even shaving creams.

Then there is colonic irrigation, in which your colon is filled with the build-up of undigested food and junk called plaque. According to the colonic programs, it is impossible to naturally rid yourself of this plaque as it stays in your colon for months or years and is a breeding ground for disease-causing toxins. Pay a small fee, though, and these colonic “roto-rooter” men will insert a hose up your bottom and wash all the plaque away. Unfortunately for them – and fortunately for you – no doctor has ever seen any of these mythical colonic plaques; they simply don’t exist.

Even though colonic cleansing can puncture your bowels causing serious injury, other tactics are even more insidious. From colon-cleansing tablets that turns your feces into a plastic consistency and apparently reassuring color, to detoxing foot pads that turn brown overnight with what manufacturers claim is toxic sludge drawn from your body. This sludge is nothing more than a substance in the pads that turns brown when it mixes with acid in your perspiration.

The detox scandal feeds on the fact that we humans want a simple remedy that frees us of our sins. We want to eat what we please, do what we please and then when it comes time to pay the piper, we want a pill that will fix us. Unfortunately, it doesn’t exist.

Or rather, it does exist, but not in pill form; instead it is in the form of proper diet and exercise. Even our diet isn’t the super hero that many imagine it to be. Take broccoli for example. Broccoli, as with all brassicas – sprouts, mustard plants, cabbages – contains cyanide. Eating these plants provides a tiny bit of poison and this poison primes the enzymes in your liver to deal better with other poisons.

The ultimate lifestyle detox program is exercise, not smoking and enjoying a healthy balanced diet consisting of meats, fish, olive oil, cheeses, salads, wholegrain cereals, nuts and fruits. All these foods provide the protein, amino acids, unsaturated fats, fiber, starches, vitamins and minerals to keep the body functioning perfectly. This also boosts your lymphatic system which is your body’s garbage removal department.

Exercise that stimulates your muscles promotes your lymphatic system allowing better blood circulation simply by moving your muscles. At any given time over 50% of the blood in your body resides in capillaries that are smaller in diameter than the blood cells they contain. These blood cells are moved through the capillaries by the movement of your muscles, not your heart. The more muscle movement you have, the better your blood flow. The better your blood flows, the more garbage and waste will be removed. This is your body’s natural detox program and the great news is that it works just fine!
